Title: Malkinson’s Iceberg (2025) // Artist: Sean Bw Parker

about the piece

Materials used – Acrylic, watercolour, ink and oil pastel on cardboard collage.

Specific methods used – sketching from existing photo of iceberg and ship, built up into ‘neo-impressionist’ painting, ‘deconstructed cubism’ (cut up and rearranged), media stories of miscarriages of justice added to make up the ‘iceberg’.

My painting Malkinson’s Iceberg is based on a quote from Andy Malkinson after his appearance on the Radio 4 Today program in 2024. Malkinson was wrongfully imprisoned for twenty years over an alleged rape about which Greater Manchester Police knew for the last twelve years of his sentence, due to their concealing DNA evidence. Andy said his case was the ‘tip of the iceberg’ due to there being thousands more wrongfully convicted people either in prison in Britain, or with licence conditions in the community. The painting is in my ‘deconstructed cubist’ style, as described by Nicholas Wells of Aleph Contemporary. It is a collage including snippets of newspaper reports, and also using acrylics, oil pastel, watercolour and ink. It is 70cm x 45cm in scale.
