Title: Enticement // Artist: Janina Aza Karpinska

about the piece

I work quickly and intuitively, trusting my hands to do the work; this piece is a page taken from an on-going re-worked (collaged) scrapbook project. There are references to Little Red Riding Hood taking fruit to her grandmother, venturing into the woods on her own, a rite of passage; as well as echoes of the temptation of forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. But I can’t help but wonder if ‘enticement’ could also also be an invitation to dare to go beyond the familiar? The word ‘barre’ reminds me of a friend starting adult ballet classes, beyond social assumptions and expectations; overcoming ones own reservations by regular exercise designed to stretch and become more flexible, able to perform to the best of one’s ability. To step out of the cage and explore unfamiliar regions for the fruit that may yield…

Janina Aza Karpinska (she/her) is a multi-disciplinary artist-poet, scavenger of materials and inspiration to create the poetry of visual images by whatever means.
