Title: anatomia di lustrini 18 // Artist: Brian Hallas
about the piece
| As an abstract/surrealist digital photographer and collagist, my art is created entirely on my iPhone. After several decades of making music and creating sound designs for downtown theater in NYC and elsewhere, I began teaching, which rather limited my expendable energy for artistic pursuits. I began taking pictures on my way to and from school that I would alter to make them abstract images. It wasn’t until I began to apply methods that I used in creating sound designs to my photography that I found my “style”. I filter and layer my images in the same manner as I would filter and layer sound to create unique soundscapes. In this way, my photography is a continuation of my life’s artistic pathways. And in these troubled times, after seven decades-plus, it is also my solace. “anatomia di lustrini 18” is one of a series of images of dried flowers shot lying on a mirror that was looking skyward. I then used filters to create the final painterly image. |
about the artist // Brian Hallas

| Brian Hallas is an innovative award-winning abstract/surrealist digital photographer and collagist from New Jersey, whose artistic quest is all about transformation. An iPhone is his tool of choice to capture and craft sometimes delightful, sometimes disturbingly hallucinogenic images and collages, where familiar landscapes become extraordinary dreamscapes. Through layering and blending, each piece is a painterly convergence of vibrant colors, dynamic shapes, intense textures, and pure invention. In each new work, his desire to push boundaries celebrates the interchange between the eye and the imagination, and showcases a versatility that resonates with viewers around the world. |
