about the piece

My art practice explores the inner world and visual storytelling. I am fascinated with the psyche and human experience and how the image acts as a container and record of a dialogue between our unconscious and conscious selves and means of connection to self and other. My current work uses elements of printmaking, drawing, collage and sculpture to create visual stories based on ideas around memory, connection to nature, the shadow and the individuation process. This piece is a monoprint which was later hand painted with ink. It depicts an encounter between a child and a wolf. I am often inspired by fairytales and folklore. I am hugely inspired by the environment and our connection to nature and, in particular wolves, and how we can protect them from being endangered and facing extinction.  This piece challenges our typical view of the “big bad wolf” as something we need to fear and persecute, replacing it with a desire to SEE the wolf as part of our ecosystem, and the hugely important role they have within it as protectors of the system as a whole.  The child’s heart and the wolf’s ignite or come alive when contact is made. The point being, care is reciprocal, heart felt and life altering for us all.
