The Sun Woke Up Enraged This Morning
by Deron Eckert
after Renee Nicole Good
I thought the world
was engulfed in flames
behind me, but I know
the real fire is blazing
all around. The red sky
in my rearview mirror
is just a pretty sunrise.
Meanwhile, a fellow poet
is lying dead somewhere
cold as the drive before me,
gunned down by the government
for doing something so simple
as driving. And I ask myself,
what is there for us to do,
so I answer by bearing
witness to the still rising sun
following me and write another
poem that could be my last.
