Title: Hitching a Ride // Artist: Larena Nellies-Ortiz
about the piece
| I was walking back to my car after a hike when I noticed passing cars casting a fuzzy trail of light onto the winding road through the fog and trees. A rush of excitement came as I spotted the headlights of another car rounding the bend. Maybe I could capture the light, maybe I couldn’t. This photo reminds me of that feeling in my body when everything slows down and I’m focused only on what is right in front of me. In that place, waiting doesn’t feel like a waste of time. Even now, I can still smell the fragrant bay trees and wet pines, and remember how small I felt against the vast stillness of the forest. |

Her work explores themes of belonging, identity, everyday wonder and the relationship we have with our environments. Her work has been featured in various publications such as The Sun Magazine, Stonecoast Review, Sunlight Press, The Ilanot Review, Indianapolis Review, and others.
