Title: Foliage and Bird Series No. 2- Gray Jays
Artist: Chris Marquez
about the piece
| Most of my paintings reference my own personal iconography. Both sets of my grandparents influence the subjects I choose to paint. Birds and the various flowers and trees from their gardens make up a large part of my childhood memories and are the reason I love nature. My use of patterned paper also references the papercrafts we’d make as kids and the quilt work done by one of my grandmothers. Because my grandparents have such a large influence on my work I try to make sure the birds I paint can be found in the Southwestern U.S where my family is from. This painting is done in acrylic paint with collaged paper and portrays gray jays that can be found in the mountains of North America, including Northern New Mexico. |
