Title: A Present Pause // Artist: Jenn Joslin

about the piece

This graphite illustration was inspired by one of my favorite poets, Mary Oliver. She writes:  “The world’s otherness is an antidote to confusion. Standing within this otherness– the beauty and the mystery of the world–can redignify the worst-stung heart.” Pictured here, a young Swainson’s Thrush perches on a branch high up in the trees, finding brief respite from the flux of life. Sheltered by moss and lichen, she pauses her flute-like trill to silently consider this new world unfurled below her feet. Much like Mary Oliver, my work draws from the deep well of hope, resilience, and comfort that fills our hearts when we connect with the natural world and learn to see it as the foundation of our collective wellbeing.
