Title: Melancholy and Matrimony // Artist: Karen Nielsen
about the piece
| I create layered digital collage art pieces to emulate the layers and complexities of existence. While working on art videos for my music, I take stills of moments that I am particularly drawn to. Using Adobe Photoshop, I blend and layer those stills with other photos, brush painting, and splatter. The artworks are not planned. They evolve. And I am often surprised by the final piece. For this piece I owe a debt of gratitude to Lars von Trier and the provocative opening sequence for his film Melancholia. And to the documentary William S. Burroughs: A Man Within. I cut and manipulated imagery from both films to create the art video from which this piece is derived. In the last lines of his final journal, William Burroughs asks, “Love, what is it?” Yes indeed…What is it? |
about the artist // Karen Nielsen
| Karen Nielsen is a physician and creator living in NYC. In this world of mass distraction she looks inward to create art, poetry, and music to express the depths and contradictions of our emotional existence. Her music has topped the college music charts, her artwork has shown at the Watermill Center among others, and several of her poems have recently been published. She uses the creative arts to train medical students in compassionate medicine. |
