about the pieces
| I am a watercolor artist and love to paint all sorts of things but ‘whimsical paintings’ have my heart. My world is full of magic, nature, fables and fairytales. My work explores the subtle stories found in nature, centering on wildlife as both a subject and a symbol. Working primarily in watercolor, I create pieces that are approachable and clear, yet layered with meaning. I am drawn to the beauty of the natural world and its oddities- the unexpected forms and small details that often go unnoticed. By weaving animals with botanical elements and imagined details, I look for the deeper connections within these contrasts. I aim to evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity through my work. Materials Used: Watercolor Absence Rhino At the centre lies a rhino, visible only through absence, carved by all that sustains it. Falling fragments signal the beginning of collapse. Ecosystems do not fail at once. They weaken gradually, one loss at a time. This work reflects on the fragile balance that holds not just the natural world, but all life together. Peace, much like an ecosystem, is built on interdependence- on care, coexistence, and an understanding that nothing exists in isolation. This work asks us to notice those early fractures. To recognise that preserving life, dignity, and harmony is not about saving one part, but about holding the entire system with care. An Elsewhere Born of Dreams My piece, “An Elsewhere Born of Dreams,” lives in memory, imagination, and the subconscious. It holds a barn owl, suspended in a dreamscape of unfamiliar plants and curious forms- an in-between world that asks for nothing more than a moment of pause. Hispid Hare The hispid hare is one of India’s rarest and most secretive animals, rarely seen as it hides among tall grasslands. In this artwork, its body is made of delicate plants, flowers, leaves, birds, insects, and other small creatures, showing that it is deeply connected to the world around it. The hare is not separate from nature- it is a part of it. Every leaf, flower, and living creature reminds us that when we protect one species, we help protect an entire ecosystem. |

| Sucharita Sengupta Suri is a visual artist and mentor based in Mumbai, India. She has run a communication design studio for over two decades and, in recent years, has fully immersed herself in her art practice. She has built a substantial body of personal work, collaborated with international brands and publishers, and exhibited widely. Inspired by nature’s beauty and oddities, cabinets of curiosities, fables, and folklore, her work evokes wonder and curiosity. |
