Title: Wisdom // Artist: Yazz Fawaz
about the piece
| “Wisdom” is an acrylic on canvas piece of abstract art that blends blues, purples and pinks into a dark background that evokes images of the cosmos. The smooth skin of the female figure is interrupted by underlying ridges of paint covered in gold that swirl across the painting as though it were breathed in and out. The movement of these golden lines is echoed in the figure’s golden textured hair, radiating out from her crown. It is a symbolic piece that was born from the author’s desire to materialize the feminine powers of creation, intuition, empathy, resistance and knowledge.This message feels particularly relevant at a time when diversity of origin, of culture and of identity is actively being suppressed, devalued and even vilified. “Wisdom” is to serve as a reminder that we all possess the potential to access those feminine powers, to nurture them in ourselves and in others so that we can all share in the beauty of belonging in this world. As a multicultural woman of color, an immigrant and a former academic, Yazz believes the voices of Others are valuable and incorporates these perspectives and influences in her artwork with the hope that it will spark in people the kind of representation and empowerment that we all deserve. |
about the artist // Yazz Fawaz
| Yazz Fawaz (she/her) is an emerging abstract artist located in Austin, TX. She enjoys bold color palettes and textured brushstrokes. Her art is influenced by her perspective and experiences as a multicultural woman of color, an immigrant and her time as an academic in african francophone literature and postcolonial ecocriticism. Her primary medium is acrylic on canvas but she experiments with mixed media including oil pastels on wood. |
